Ingredients: 900 g (2 lb) cooking apples, peeled, cored and sliced; 75 g (1/3 cup) granulated sugar; 1 tbsp (15 ml) water; 175 g (1 1/2 cups) plain/all-purpose flour; 100 g (7 tbsp) cold unsalted butter, cubed; 100 g (1/2 cup) light brown sugar

Ingredients

Apple filling

900 g (2 lb) cooking apples, peeled, cored and sliced
75 g (1/3 cup) granulated sugar
1 tbsp (15 ml) water

Crumble topping

175 g (1 1/2 cups) plain/all-purpose flour
100 g (7 tbsp) cold unsalted butter, cubed
100 g (1/2 cup) light brown sugar

Instructions

Heat the oven to 190°C/375°F. Butter a 20 cm (8 in) baking dish.
Put the apples in the dish. Add the granulated sugar and water, then toss to coat.
Rub the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the brown sugar.
Spread the topping evenly over the apples without pressing it down.
Bake for 35-40 minutes, until the topping is golden and the fruit is bubbling at the edges. Leave to stand for 10 minutes before serving.
